GB Team to Virtus European Athletics Championships announced

SportExcel UK is proud to announce its GB Team poised for success at the 2024 Virtus Open European Athletics Championships in Uppsala, Sweden 11th to 16th June.

The 14 strong GB Team comprises athletes, Martina Barber (Stevenage, Herts), Sam Fernando (Cupar, Fife), Declan Manning (Bungay, Suffolk), Joel Mattacks (Southwick, Wiltshire), James McKibbin (Barnstaple, N Devon), Kieran O Hara (Upminster, Essex), Matthew Power (Edinburgh), Ella Richards (Teignmouth, Devon), Daniel Wolff (Wallington, Surrey), Fabio Zamparelli (Truro, Cornwall), supported by staff members Filomena Zamparelli (Team Manager/Head Coach), Kevin Manning (Coach), Pat Gahagan (Coach), Liz Power (Team Support Officer/Escort).

The GB Team, a strong mix of experienced athletes and five newcomers, making their international debut, will be one of at least 16 nations competing for the top spot in what promises to be a fiercely competitive Championships.

Speaking about her debut GB appointment Filomena Zamparelli, GB Team Manager/Head Coach said

“I am delighted, honoured and proud to have been appointed Team Manager/Head Coach to lead the GB Team in the up coming Virtus European Championships.  We have a great group of coaches and support staff and an amazing cohort of athletes representing Great Britain. 

Each athlete has worked very hard to reach the level required to be in the team, and their selection is a reflection of their commitment and desire to be the best that they can be. For me, the key to success is that everyone in the team is happy, healthy and competitive. 

I am looking forward to, a successful GB representation at the European Championships. Nothing is impossible, it’s their time to shine! “

“A huge congratulations to the whole Team on their invitation to the Virtus Championships. Its not an easy task to secure a selection to a British International Team.  We have big aspirations for the Team in Sweden and I hope that includes some strong medals, and some great personal performances too.

I hope it proves to be a successful Championships for the Great Britain Team and that each athlete and staff member comes away with some great memories, but importantly some performances to be proud of.”

The Virtus European Athletics Championships is organised by the Swedish Athletics Federation, sanctioned by Virtus (World) and World Para Athletics. The Championships is part of the Virtus Europe regional programme, with Virtus Europe being affiliated to Virtus (World), the global organisation that promotes elite sport for athletes with an intellectual impairment.

Virtus Championships are elite level competitions exclusively for athletes with intellectual impairment across 3 classes, which includes athletes with intellectual disability (T/F20), Down syndrome and autism.

The regional Championship programme leads to World Championships and the route to the Virtus Global Games, a multi-sport elite level Championships, scheduled every 4 years in the year ahead of the Paralympic Games.  The next Virtus Global Games is in Egypt in 2027.

SportExcelUK promotes, supports, and facilitates talented sports people in the UK to train, compete and excel in national and international sport. It is the only official Great Britain member of Virtus, is responsible for and manages eligibility and classification across all sports, across the UK and manages GB Teams across multiple sports to Virtus events.
