British players battle it out at Inas Global Games

This week saw the start of the INAS Global Games in Ecuador, where Great Britain was being represented by some of its most talented athletes aiming to take the top prize.

The GB tennis team is made up of six athletes from across the UK, two of which are involved in our My Sport, My Voice! Campaign.

The six players are:
Fabrice Higgins
Thomas Mellor
Peter Millar (Ambassador)
Shain Lewis (Rep)
Dominic Iannotti
Dawn Taylor.

The first day saw the start of the Men’s Doubles Tennis matches where Team GB got off to an incredible start winning all their opening matches against both rival nations. Millar started the tournament with two comfortable victories with his fellow partner Mellor.

Day two saw the conclusion of the Doubles events and the beginning of the individuals’ competition. The end of the team events saw the GB Team with two wins and two loses. Higgins and Iannotti won both of their final matches with 2-0 victories over their rivals. Whereas Millar and Mello unfortunately lost both of their remaining matches 2-0 which ended an overall success for the doubles competition.

The singles round robin competition began shortly after the final doubles matches with five out of the six Great Britain team winning both of their matches with Millar beating his oppositions 7-4 and 6-1. Unfortunately, Lewis lost both of his matches ending what was an overall successful day.

Day three of the Games saw the final matches of the round robin sequence where it was another two wins and two loses for the GB Team. Ionatti and Higgins won both of their games against fellow GB member Miller and Australians David Burke.

Whereas Lewis and Mellor lost their matches against Ondrej Sedlisky (Czech) and Archie Graham (Aus). This saw the end of all the round robin matches and got ready for day four’s quarter finals.

The men’s singles quarter finals saw Millar come up against fellow GB athlete Higgins where unfortunately Higgins was too much of a match, beating him 6-1.

Fellow GB athletes Mellor and Iannotti played matches but only Iannotti progressed to the semi-finals. Lewis played a consolation match against Czechs Jakub Jerhot beating him 6-0.
